On December 16, a tree lighting ceremony was held, as one of two events to not just to celebrate Christmas but to begin a new tradition at Jardines del Rio project. According to one of the participants, this event is good for the community since “it takes a community to raise a child”, actually he remembered that that is how Costa Rica used to be and is happy to see it is coming back, but for now let’s call it a new tradition.

While in Quepos, come to Chocolat Caffé & Patisserie and treat yourself to a taste of heaven.
Sam, the owner, and his staff, several of whom are IMAS work skills practicum students, come in early to ensure that all the baking is ready for the 7 am opening of the caffé. As you walk by the caffé, you cannot help but be enticed by the aroma in the street. Many of the treats are reminiscent of breads and pastries you would find strolling down the streets of Europe. Others have that Costa Rican touch you can’t help but dig into.

Our hope is that this community becomes a positive role model for other projects and one day their grandchildren will return to the community for future holiday celebrations. In the wake of tragedy, when the community needs to come together the most, is when it falls apart, time and time again. I’ve seen it happen after mass shootings (which seem to be almost daily in the States now), after devastating natural disasters, bombings abroad, car accidents, and really anything where something unimaginably terrible happens. Sometimes these horrible things happen at the hands of some unwell people or tough circumstances and sometimes, well, accidents just happen.

Jardines del Río Project - This community helps to provide opportunities to low-income families that are rebuilding from the storm, elderly populations, and single mothers, usually those who have children with mental or physical disabilities. There are 6 parks to provide a safe space for the children to play and it’s own water plant to provide fresh water to each family.

The ladies who reside in Quepos and area make up the core of the group welcoming, visitors, new residents as well reuniting with our part-time residents. Making friendships, providing support and sharing advice to those unfamiliar with the Costa Rican lifestyle. Some of the ladies attending the luncheons are from outside Quepos Canton. LadieswhoLunch has a smaller tightknit group whose friendship goes above and beyond monthly luncheons.
