In an interview with Ask Zipy, Ken and Shannon, owners and designers of Costa Rica’s El Escape Bus discussed their latest endeavor of bringing a new form of entertainment to Manuel Antonio. An escape room, in this case a bus, is also known as an “escape game” inspired by the “escape-the-room” style video game. The players of the game solve a number of riddles or puzzles using clues and strategy to complete the objectives at hand. The players are given a time limit to reveal the plot which is hidden in the room. The first permanent room was open in Asia in the 2010’s. It is the largest growing entertainment world wide.
When asked how they have learned about this new form of entertainment, Shannon shared that in 2017, while in the States visiting family, they all went to an escape room and were captivated by the game. They all had a great time. Ken indicated that up until that time he had no clue as to what it was all about, and right away, he was hooked. For two weeks, they went to several different escape rooms while travelling throughout the states. When they arrived back in Costa Rica, Shannon and Ken began their journey into investigating a possible business venture that offers entertainment all year round, that is relatively unknown in Costa Rica.
In the upcoming months, Shannon and Ken knew this was it and developed a business plan. They researched a location and eventually decided on a mobile unit. At the suggestion of a friend, Shannon and Ken inquired about a bus on the market and within three days, they were the proud owners of a bus that required little adjustment for their purposes.
While working on the theme, they were struggling with getting permits from the government. Since they had not heard about escape games, there was not a category for such business. After several months and an enlightened health official, they were granted a permit. In the meantime, Shannon and Ken came up with two concepts for their rooms, one being pirate and the other being a cartel theme. Their creativity paid off and now they proudly show the rooms to potential clients.
After only being opened for two weeks, they already have a following from aficionados to first-timers from all over the world. One example is a family from New Zealand, who has never heard of such a game and came twice while visiting Manuel Antonio. Another is a couple from the UK who has been to over 30 rooms all over the world. It is a great adventure for one and all and everybody is a winner, but it does require teamwork.
Ken indicated that the game is a great form of team building within companies. As an example, they invited the management and staff of one of the biggest Hostels/Hotels in Manuel Antonio. In groups of four they went through the room. Everyone contributed to solve the wide range of skill sets, using all their senses to solve the puzzle. Ken laughed and said that the competition between the groups was fierce, but the object of the game proved to be correct. It was an invaluable experience for all the employees. Shannon took pictures so that the staff could have evidence besides the everlasting memories of the games.
Both Shannon and Ken promise “Satisfaction Guaranteed”, so if you have never participated in this game, come and partake in this great adventure.
