This is a fantastic opportunity to get a glimpse into modest Costa Rican life. Your experience will start with your hosts Gabriel and Mima?walking?you around the farm area and showing you the different fruits and vegetables they grow. You will be using some of those ingredients to cook a traditional meal during your upcoming cooking lesson. Mima’s and Gabriel’s kitchen is clean and well kept – however, it is rustic and very small. You will use the outside area to do most of your prep work and the final cooking will be a demonstration as there isn?t much space to cook together in the kitchen. You will also see and get to use a few really innovative appliances like a solar oven and a stationary bicycle that powers a blender!
The cooking part of the experience will last for 30-45 minutes. You will learn how to make a pico de gallo tomato salsa from scratch and also the plantain dessert, which is their own recipe, inspired by old traditional Costa Rican cooking.
What You Can Expect
Gabriel and Mima are environmental science graduates and entrepreneurs, whose mission is to change the rural development strategy in Costa Rica. Their organic farm is located in a southern mountain, only 13 km away from downtown San Jose, it is a rural area with a dry climate and they have 1 hectare (10,000 square meters) of land, where they conserve and protect natural resources, through sustainable agricultural practices and the implementation of integrated ecological systems.?They grow a variety of vegetables on their farm including lettuce, coriander, parsley, kale, mustard, spring onion, carrots, amongst others, which they sell at organic markets on weekends.
You will join Gabriel and Mima for your meal in their living room, which is set up with two long tables and beautifully decorated with flowers. If you?re visiting for lunch or when the weather is good you can also eat outside, while enjoying the beautiful views of the fields! Gabriel and Mima are also in the process of building a new kitchen and dining area and you will notice that construction is still going on while you?re there.
It is a small adventure to get up the mountain to Gabriel and Mima?s farm, however, once you?re there it is truly an oasis surrounded by nature! Even though the location is close to the city, it is still remote as almost no one is going up to the mountain area and not too many people live there.
Please note:?If you hire a car and plan on self-driving to the farm, you should know that the final section leading up to the farm is steep with deep ruts in the road. Also, on the farm there is a very clean and nice dry composting toilet but not a fully enclosed conventional bathroom that you?re used to ? this can be the highlight for some! The farm is very well maintained and has dogs, one goat, special varieties of chickens, small forest trails, beautiful crop fields, and very interesting minimum environmental impact systems.
