Cartago is the second smallest province of the country after Heredia. It is characterized by a humid tropical climate, with average temperatures between 12 and 20 degrees Celsius. It is home to the Irazú volcano, the highest in the country and the Turrialba volcano, as well as the Talamanca mountain range, where the highest hill in Costa Rica, Cerro Chirripó, stands out.
Among its main rivers are the Reventazón, Grande de Orosi, Pacuare, and Chirripó.
One of the most visited points of Cartago is the Basilica de nuestra señora de Los Angeles, which every year thousands of believers walk from all parts of the country to visit the virgin.
Cartago has beautiful landscapes and national parks such as Turrialba Volcano National Park, Tapantí National Park, Cerró de la Muerte, Lankester Botanical Garden, Prusia Forest, Durán Sanatorium, famous for alleged sightings of ghosts, among others.
