Bagaces is divided in four districts, named Bagaces, Fortuna, Mogote and Río Naranjo, it was established in 1918, and it's named after a respected indigenous tribe's elder, Bagatzi.
It's best known for the Tempisque Conservation Area, which is located in Bagaces. This is one of the most active and dedicated organizations in Costa Rica, and it's responsible for supervising the Palo Verde National Park and the Lomas de Barbudal Biological Reserve.
