Puntarenas is the most extensive province of the country. Its capital is Puntarenas which is a great point to connect with the south of the Nicoya peninsula by ferry.

Its climate is tropical and dry. The province has numerous areas and protected parks of great biological wealth such as Cabo Blanco, Manuel Antonio, Monteverde and Corcovado, known for having 5% of the world's biological diversity.

Coco Island is also located in Puntarenas in the Pacific Ocean and was declared a national park. The island is uninhabited, but there are park rangers, biologists, researchers and sailors 24 hours a day.
