Esparza is the second oldest city in Costa Rica, Esparza was founded by Spanish explorers in the year 1574. Originally the initial site chosen for the founding of the city of Esparza chosen by the Spanish is on a cliff overlooking the Nicoya Peninsula , but the site was abandoned and moved inland to protect itself from any potential attack.
