The mountainous canton of Montes de Oro lies in the Cordillera de Tilarán northeast of the city of Puntarenas. Montes de Oro is the only canton in the province of Puntarenas, in Costa Rica, which does not limit the Pacific Ocean, since it borders to the south with Esparza, to the west with Puntarenas and to the east with San Ramón de Alajuela. The head of the canton of Montes de Oro is Miramar, where the church located in Cedral de Miramar has as its historical-architectural heritage of Costa Rica.
One of the biggest economic impact comes from Arrocera Montes de Oro, one of the largest Costa Rican rice cultivation and important source of employment in the area. The services sector also has growth in the canton. The new technologies, in particular the computer science, the cellular telephony and the design of web pages constitute the greater technological development in the region.
It has an infrastructure of communication with the rest of the country through the North Inter-American Highway, which crosses the canton at the height of the district of San Isidro and the South of the district of Miramar. A branch of said highway communicates Miramar with the North Inter-American Highway at the height of Cuatro Cruces.
