Located in the southeast of the canton of Puriscal, in the districts of Mercedes Sur and Chires. La Cangreja Park is located near the town of Mastatal, 45 km., South of Santiago de Puriscal.
Despite its relatively small size, La Cangreja is a refuge for migratory birds and has a richer flora than that of Corcovado National Park. It is the only place in the world where there is the Plinia puriscalensis tree, which gives the fruit stuck to the trunk, and occurs in the surroundings of the rivers and mountains of the La Cangreja National Park, located in the district of Chires. Plinia puriscalensis bears fruit on the trunk (similar to the fruit of cocoa). This fruit has a round shape and a taste similar to guava. It also protects the last redoubt of Puriscal forest.
