Just returned from a trip to Costa Rica with my sights set on a fishing trip, but returned terribly disappointed. I met the Phoneix Sport Fishing salesperson, German Mendez Quiros, while walking with my wife on the main strip in Jaco Beach. He was set up in one of those make shift displays - they all are - so despite his set-up looking shady I decided to talk with him about coordinating a trip. When German told me that there were no other people interested in sharing a trip that week (full-price is $600 but could be split among 3 people) he said his "cousin" named Luis has a boat and would take both me and my wife (only spectating) out for a trip for $385. Here's what happened: German picked us up 2 days later at 6:45 am (15 minutes late) and drove us to Los Suenos. By the time we got on board it was 7:30 or so. The boat turned out to be a rickety 17' piece of junk run by a husband and wife team who were to put it lightly, incompetent at best. Not only didn't we catch a single fish except for a minuscule junk fish (which he kept) but they didn't even bother to change our bait once - hours of fishing and not even a singe attempt to refresh the bait (which was squid) or try something different. After hopelessly and constantly moving around, the captain decided that he had enough fishing and decided to return to port at 11:15! We were supposed to have returned at 1 pm. Neither the captain nor his wife spoke English, so we were left wondering what was going on. German meanwhile was waiting on the beach for us so somehow he knew we would be back early. When I questioned him why we came back so early he said what do you mean, it is 12:15 pm? Both my wife and I took out our cell phones and showed him that it was 11:30 am. This German was a delusional scammer from the get go. When I told him that I would file a complaint with my credit card company he got nasty and started telling more lies. We literally couldn't communicate with the captain or his wife, yet somehow he told German that we wanted to return to port because we wanted to catch Marlin! What an unbelievably stupid, grandiose lie. Weeks later when I received his written response to the credit card company complaint (I was looking to be partially refunded for the time we lost), German stated that I would not take $50 that he offered me as compensation and that I told him he could wipe his *ss with the $50 - it gets better - German continued to state that I told him that I was in the Mafia and that he should refund my money right away. What a dumb-ass little creature. Stay far away from Phoenix Sport Fishing - it is a disaster waiting to happen. I realize this German guy reps many boats, so these companies should think twice before they deal with him. Don't risk a once-in-a-lifetime fishing trip on a scam artist company. Look elsewhere.
