Leave the beach behind to experience?the best of Rincon de la Vieja National Park on this dual hiking and tubing adventure from?the Guanacaste area. Walk down the Las Pailas Trail with a guide to see bubbling geothermal activity and wildlife like howler monkeys and iguanas, and then change into your swimsuit for a tubing trip down the Rio Negro. ?This tour includes all transportation, activities, and meals as per itinerary.

What You Can Expect

The changing landscapes of the beautiful dry tropical forest and savanna vegetation make for an interesting hike and a chance to see a wide variety of habitats. Your local guide will be sure to show you any visible wildlife within the area on the day of your visit. During this moderately hilly hike, you will be granted many opportunities to take awesome photos of the volcano, especially on a clear day.

Once you reach Rincon de la Vieja National Park, you will hike the Las Pailas Trail, a 2.5-mile (4 kilometers) loop that takes you to an area with the almost other-worldly terrain. Steamy funerals, coffee-colored boiling water pools, and bubbling grey mud that occasionally spurts upward in a giant splash lie in the clearings of the forest.?No wonder this trail is called the ?cauldrons? trail, as the bubbling earth mimics the bubbling cauldrons found in kitchen hearths years ago. Kids especially love to see this. These volcanic features are located far enough away from the trail that this remains a safe and fun hike for everyone.

Large groups of travelers frequent this park just to go birdwatching, to spot some of the 300 species of birds that live here. On your hike, you might see other forms of wildlife that live here, too, such as iguanas, snakes, white-nosed coatis, collared peccaries, and three species of monkeys. If you hear the sound of branches cracking or interesting animal noises, look up! It could be a spider monkey. You?ll know for sure if you hear a howler monkey as their bellow is quite loud despite their small size. Bring your camera or binoculars to get a closer look!

After a busy morning, you will be ready to experience a real Costa Rican typical lunch at the ranch. You will start at Canyon Lodge, an award-winning eco-tourism hotel and horse ranch. You will have the option to go to the river in a vehicle.

Upon arrival, you?ll have an opportunity to use the changing rooms to put on your bathing suit and river attire. Please bring along a set of clothes that can get wet as well as dry clothes for after the tour. Your guides will give you safety instructions and provide you with tubes designed especially for this river, which have plenty of handles to grab onto and a durable protective lining that prevents tearing while you skid and bounce off river rocks. You?ll also wear a helmet as an extra safety precaution.

Some people have compared this river adventure to bumper cars, because even with the speed of the rapids and variety of obstacles, your inflatable tube is meant to bounce gracefully off the rocks, absorbing the majority of the impact and allowing you to stay safe and enjoy the adventure.
