Zipy´s Advice on Banking in Costa Rica | El consejo de Zipy de bancos en Costa Rica
Hi friends, as you can see, it has been quite some time since I have written a post. Have you missed me? Today I have a special guest. His name is Zipy. You will be hearing from him from time to time as he gives us some sound advice about how to navigate throughout daily life in Costa Rica. Now, don't be stereotyping this little guy. He is the quickest sloth I know. In fact, I can barely keep up with him! You can catch him traveling throughout Costa Rica, bringing joy to everyone he meets . . . Kind of like the Santa Clause of the jungle, I suppose. Anyways, enough from me. Zipy, take it away!

Zipy, ¡te toca a tí!

Hellllllllo beautiful people from far and wide! Zipy here to help you with all of your banking needs! Well, at least deciding the right bank for you! I tried accounting once, but I still use my fingers to count and couldn't get past 6! There are downsides to being a three-toed sloth, you know!

There are many banks in Costa Rica. Here is a list of the most popular.

  • Banco Nacional
  • BAC
  • Banco de Costa Rica
  • Banco Popular
  • CoopeAlianza
  • Scotiabank
  • BCR
  • Banco Promerica

If you are traveling to Costa Rica for a visit you can really use any ATM that you would like. However, check with your home bank to make sure that you are not going to get fees from your bank for using the foreign ATM, from the foreign bank for using their ATM, and/or from your bank to convert your home currency to the local currency of colones. Wooooooo man. While you are at it, throw in a "pay your local friendly sloth fee", because, gosh, isn't this little squishy face so cute? I accept my local currency of leaves and time for a nice, long nap.

Also, if you are visiting, I strongly recommend carrying cash with you (I am not talking about thousands of dollars, but some places and small vendors will only accept cash. This includes cabs and buses). Also, make sure to note the exchange rate, so you are prepared to pay the right amount, aren't looking too silly shuffling through bills and coins, and are not taken advantage of (rare but it happens anywhere). Just be sure to keep your cash, and all of your valuables, secure. I can give some advice on this another day, back to banking.

If you are an expat or plan to stay here for an extended period of time (make sure you know the laws and obtain the correct visa) you can open up a bank account. I recommend using Banco Promerica or BCR. Both banks are very helpful and require the least amount of documentation. In fact, you can walk in with a passport and $5 and open up a savings account with BCR, with Banco Promerica you need to get a financial statement from a CPA for the amounts you would like to be able to deposit and transfer into your account.  The fees for this document will vary. They will even issue you a handy, dandy ATM card. Hey, no fees! There is an annual fee to hold an account. It is $10 a year at BCR. They prorate you depending on when you sign up. The bankers will ask you questions about why you are in Costa Rica, what you do for work (remember, you can't legally work in Costa Rica without a work visa), where you live there, and other basic information such as your passport number, social security number, and drivers license.
