Alajuela is the second largest province of Costa Rica located in the central mountain range of the country. The province is home to two of the most famous volcanoes in the country including Arenal volcano located in the fortune of San Carlos, and the Poas volcano.
The climate is varied as you can find dry tropical climate towards the north of the region and tropical climate in the rest of the province.
In Alajuela is the Juan Santamaría International Airport, which is the country's main airport and provides international and domestic flights.
Among the most visited activities by tourists is the Poás Volcano National Park, the city of Zarcero known for its park, Sarchi site for the manufacture of typical oxcarts and handicrafts, La Paz Waterfalls, the indigenous reserve Maleku, and Caño Negro among others.
One of the holidays celebrated by the province is those of Palmares in January.
Alajuela has many lodging options and restaurants, as well as movie theatres and shopping centers as well as one of the largest farmers markets in the country. Every Saturday morning locals and visitors gather to buy fresh products, craft items and listen to local music. It is a good way for people to experience the true lifestyle of the Costa Rican.
